Psoriasis Cured? or Modern Health vs. Anchient Alternative Health Treatments

By Jeff Watters

If you suffer from Psoriasis, as I have, or know someone that suffers from this skin disease, this article is a must read,  You will want to print out this article to refer to the information here from time to time and having a print copy will make reference easier. What you will learn is how new treatments are changing the impact living with the disease.

This is my story and it is all true.  I felt it, lived it, suffered it. I am sharing with you, in the hope that you or your loved ones will not suffer needlessly, as I did when at the age of 47 I was struck with Psoriasis; A disease that effects the skin by rupturing from the layers below to the surface and then creating white scales on the surface. If you have it you know what that means, if you don’t have it, thank god you don’t.

I am not the kind of a guy that goes to doctors. In fact, I need to be almost dead before I even think about medical attention. Many men are like this. We don't want to know what's wrong with us unless there is something we can do about it ourselves. I suppose this is a Mars/Venus kind of thing since most women are smart enough to get to the doctors office when they are sick. Men on the other hand want to be self sufficient even to the point of stupidity.

So there I was with a growing problem and the red skin patches with white scales. This itchy unsightly skin was spreading fast. This disease runs in blood lines I am told, yet no one in my family had ever had it that could be remembered by any relative still alive. I went as far as investigating at family reunions with no person recalling anyone in the family ever having it. The doctors tell me it runs mostly in northern European families but can affect anyone. I am of Scottish descent and that makes me a good candidate for the disease.

The Medical Solution

After being infected for about six months with the rash and patchy Psoriasis scales, it spread to 80% of my limbs and most of my body, on my hands, even beneath the hair on my head. So as a "last resort" I sought medical attention from a well known Dermatologist here in my city of Dover, Delaware. After a biopsy I was promptly given steroid pills to use for ten days and a cream to apply topically, The cream, which turned out to be more steroids, seemed to work wonders against the spread of Psoriasis. However, I wish I had known about effects the double dose of steroids would later cause before spreading it all over my skin twice a day. But I wasn't told and so I willingly overdosed myself. I only mention it here so you will be forewarned and won't make the same stupid mistake I unknowingly did.

So this was my routine for several months with great results. My skin was clearing up. There were no visible red patches that could be seen by strangers. Embarrassment can be another factor in having Psoriasis, a psychological factor that most people will never understand. Things were getting better for me and thank god I had good insurance because this treatment was very expensive. So all is fine right? Except! Steroids are addictive! Not the kind of addiction you get from narcotic cravings but the body develops a dependency on the steroids. Once you begin to wean off of them the disease reacts negatively. It fights back! This is exactly what happened to me. Once I began limiting the cream the problem came back in a double dose.

More Medical Attention

To get better results go to another doctor and get a second opinion right? To me that made sense so after waiting for months for an opening I was off to doctor #2, someone that had a bit more experience with treating Psoriasis. She told me about the cream being more steroids and this was after a full year on this very expensive treatment ($300 or more per tube without insurance). This was first that I learned of the addictive quality of the cream I had been using up to three times a day at that point. She switched my treatment to Methotrexate. This is a treatment used to combat cancer but also works well for Psoriasis and several other diseases. Methotrexate worked like a charm. My dose was 10 mgs a week until I was clear of the sores and then 7.5 mgs as preventive treatment. I was extremely happy with this except I am not a person that likes to take any drugs. When my skin cleared I quit the treatment to look for an alternative treatment.

Alternative Medicine

As a lover of nature and all things natural I tried everything possible to come up with my own cure. Nothing seemed to work. I cruised YouTube for videos, no luck. Tea Tree oil, ineffective. Yet, believing that the good lord put everything on the earth to be used for human purpose I kept at it. And then one day my luck changed.

The Cure?

I began subscribing to alternative health publications at a great expense. Read everything that had to do with Psoriasis and what some people in Eastern Medicine were calling “Leaky Gut Syndrome.” And that is when good fortune smiled upon me. A book, a best seller too, had been written by Dr. John O.A. Pagano entitled “Healing Psoriasis.” I bought this book and studied it at every opportunity. According to Dr. Pagano’s research of treatments with the causes and effects of Psoriasis, he concluded in approximately 300 pages; the treatment was simply avoiding certain foods that contributed to "leaky gut" and taking two natural teas on a daily basis. Pretty far fetched for a person who is used to western medicine but when you are desperate you will be surprised at what you will do.

If you guessed I avoided the foods mentioned in the book, you’re right. I drank the teas daily too. Slippery Elm tea (also available in capsules) and American Saffron. You can find these either in your health food store or search online for a Casey Cure Store. Neither ingredient is expensive on its own, just avoid buying bundled packages that include creams. This only runs up the price without merit. Also, I find it easier to take the Slippery Elm in a capsule instead of the tea. I suggest you do this too if you follow Dr. Pagano's method.

So what were these foods and did it work? Yes, it worked! Just as indicated in the book avoiding nightshades, primarily tomatoes, tobacco, peppers, white flour, eggplant, and paprika was all I had to do. Limiting red meat and sugars also were required in my case. Yes, this worked and still works for me today but there are other things you must do in addition to just avoiding certain foods. It can be more complicated then a brief explanation. For instance in the winter I keep a humidifier running 24/7. This prevents my skin from becoming dry.

Of course this is a simple explanation, not the whole story but I am pleased to tell everyone affected by this disease there is a natural treatment that does work without medicines from the pharmacy. Those without insurance can use this treatment. It is very inexpensive. For me that means offering hope to the millions of people affected by Psoriasis. If you have insurance you can use a combination of the two. I would because I know how embarrassing the disease is personally. If you cannot afford both Slippery Elm and American Saffron, then pick up Slippery Elm in a health food store and save up for the Saffron. I believe Slippery Elm does more than any other ingredient.

I am in no way suggesting that you just avoid these foods without reading Dr. Pagano's book. I feel the book with the other treatments and its knowledge base is a must have for anyone who has Psoriasis and for those that treat Psoriasis. Don’t just give up these foods and expect the results I had. Oh, by the way, I am told it takes two to three months, without the steroids or Methotrexate, for every year you have had this disease to clear your skin. It took me about seven months in total. If you combine the treatment with Methotrexate it should clear up probably to never return if you stay true to the treatment.  Which is hard to do because you feel pretty good to have your skin cleared and it is natural to want your favorite foods.

If you are wondering if I ever get the red patches now the answer is yes, but they are minimal and seasonal. Psoriasis strikes more in the cold months if you didn't know. Now, I have a choice of treatments and the opportunity to control what is causing the problem. I do sometimes stray from the diet as I want variations in my meals, but I know when I need to back off. Whenever I see a red patch I go to the strict diet and stay there.
